Trail Ride with Fran & Maria, May 17, 2007
I went horseback riding with Fran and Maria on a beautiful afternoon in May. There was not a cloud in the sky. It was in the 60's, and green was coming up everywhere. Maria was going to ride Fran's wonderful white Welsh pony, Mikey, bareback!
Here are the 3 of us, out on the trails behind Fran's farm. Fran & I ride fairly regularly -- Fran on Ridian, and me on Clover. Clover is a full-sized Welsh pony, very calm and forgiving. Ridian is good-sized horse, and much more spirited. (I think she is a Cob/Thouroughbred cross)
The horse trails of the Caledonia Conservancy are really amazing. Much of it is in mature forest, and there is even a decent stand of old-growth beech trees at one point. Even the younger forest areas have a very high canopy; it's really beautiful.
OK, so without a photographer along, we had to take two pictures to get a group photo of the 3 of us. This is a sunny spot right outside the entrance to the woods.
Although Maria has ridden with Fran and me on several occasions, she has always ridden Zach (a huge Trakehner). But we finally convinced her to come ride on Mikey, and it was a real treat for her. Mikey behaved like a perfect gentleman; he is stylish and spirited and he walks with a purpose -- sort of like a little roadster. He seemed really at home out in the woods. Maria looked just beautiful on Mikey -- the two of them trotting over the green fields like a fairy tale.
